The National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC) is the leading agency on nanotechnology development in Thailand. Established on 13 August 2003, NANOTEC is one of four research agency operating under the jurisdiction of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).

NANOTEC has the dual role of serving as a national R&D center and a funding agency to support research activities in universities and public institutions. It has established strong links with leading universities in Thailand in the form of Center of Excellence in Nanotechnology (COENs) which consist of more than 400 nanotechnology researchers, as well as with leading nanotechnology centres overseas. On August 29, 2012 NANOTEC and 8 universities signed the Center of Excellence (CoE) Agreement a 5 years counterpart funding approach between NANOTEC and the 8 universities.

MISSION: To conduct and support research, development, design and engineering in nanotechnology, and transfer the technology to industrial and service sectors in a constructive manner to increase Thailand’s competitiveness, promote social awareness and improve the quality of life and the environment.

In parallel to pushing for nanotechnology development, NANOTEC is also obligated to promoting understanding and awareness of nanosafety both within NANOTEC and the general public. Several activities have been initiated ranging from knowledge management, requesting policies, and public engagement.

Nano-Life and Health Research Unit:
Research and development goal is to enhance human and animal health. This cluster consists of 3 research programs: Nano-Molecular Target Discovery focuses on the design and development of molecules for targeting purposes with main applications in medical diagnostics. Nano Delivery System emphasizes the use of nanotechnology for encapsulation, controlled release and target delivery of drugs, biopharmaceutical agents including bioactive compounds, in order to improve the effectiveness for prevention and treatment. Nano-cosmeceutical focuses on the delivery system in novel cosmeceuticals from Thai natural resources.

Nanomaterials and Nanosystems Engineering Research Unit:

Research and development on synthesis chemistry, fabrication&integration techniques, advanced characterization, scaled-up engineering and theoretical calculations to achieve improved design, and utilization of nanomaterials and nanosystems for energy, environment, and medical applications.

Nano-Agriculture and Environment Research Unit:

Research and development on innovative food, agriculture and environment with the application of nanotechnology to modify materials, structures and surfaces for strengthening economics and social cooperation, and promote environmental sustainability. These include high value- added products, to minimize the usage of natural resource and toxic chemicals as well as to reduce the emission of waste and pollutants throughout the entire production and consumption processes.

Functional Nanomaterials and Nanofrontier Research Unit:

Research and development on molecular engineering (synthesis, functionalization and encapsulation) of responsive materials. The second aspect expands across nanostructure & functional assembly for innovative design, synthesis and assembly of functional nanomaterials for applications in (bio) chemical sensing/imaging and optoelectronics. These developed nanomaterials that have special features and which focuses on specific application areas such as textile and household products, including the use of natural resources to improve quality of life.

Nanometrology and Characterizations and Engineering Unit:

Research and development in the field of nano-metrology, nano-safety, nanoscale testing service, including nano-characterization of nano product properties, and engineering-prototype development. We also provide the research and development projects available to industrial sectors by using modern and advanced nanotechnology instruments. Our high quality services are also certified with both national and international standards.


One of the major goals of NANOTEC is to be a “solution provider in nanotechnology”, therefore a high percentage of the nanotechnology research is focused on industrial applications.

Since its inception, NANOTEC has provided more than 15,000 testing services to industries and researchers annually. Furthermore, nano safety initiatives are being developed in compliance with international standards and global networks via SAICM, OECD, and ISO,

NANOTEC has identified 5 Flagship programs which it considers are in response to both national and NSTDA priorities. The 5 Flagship programs are as follow:

Platform Technologies:

These flagship programs will utilize the 3 core platform technologies: Nano materials by design and synthesis, Nanoscale Characterization by metrology, safety and standards, and Nano Systems by engineering and advanced manufacturing.

The flagship programs have a life cycle of maximum 3 years of which there are quarterly progress report meetings. All NANOTEC staff is encouraged to sign up to be members of flagship program they are interested in. Staff can be a member of more than one flagship program.

NANOTEC have adopted the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) approach to keeping track of each flagship program status of development.
